Heavy! The world’s largest pipeline crossing the Yangtze River started today and the construction of the southern section of the Sino-Russian Eastern Route was officially launched

On July 28, the Sino-Russian Eastern Route Natural Gas Pipeline (Yongqing-Shanghai Section) (referred to as the southern section of the Sino-Russian Eastern Route) Yangtze River shield crossing project was launched. This project is a major project invested and managed by the National Petroleum and Natural Gas Pipe Network Group Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as the National Pipe Network Group) and a major measure to promote the construction of new infrastructure in the energy sector. The commencement of the project marks the official start of the construction of the southern section of the China-Russia Eastern Route.

The southern section of the Sino-Russian Eastern Route starts from Yongqing County, Langfang City, Hebei Province, passes through Hebei, Shandong, and Jiangsu from north to south, and ends in Baihe Town, Shanghai. The Yangtze River shield crossing project is a key control project on the southern section of the Eastern Route of China-Russia. It is not only the necessary passage for Russian gas to Shanghai, but also the only passage for the coastal natural gas pipeline planned and constructed by Jiangsu Province to cross the river.

The construction site of the project is located about 6.1 kilometers downstream of the Sutong Bridge in the southern branch of the Yangtze River Estuary, between the Nantong Economic and Technological Development Zone and Changshu Economic and Technological Development Zone in Jiangsu Province. It is planned to be constructed and put into operation in June 2025. After the completion of the project, the “Russian gas” passing through the three northeastern provinces and northern China can be smoothly sent to the Yangtze River Delta region, which can transport 18.9 billion cubic meters of natural gas every year. This will complete the interconnection of the four pipelines of the Sino-Russian East Line Yongqing-Shanghai, West First Line, West Second Line Shanghai Branch, and Jiangsu-Rudong Pipeline, greatly improving the energy and transportation environment in the Yangtze River Delta region, and effectively improving the emergency support capacity of the natural gas pipeline network in the Yangtze River Delta region, and so meet the development needs of the natural gas industry and the demand for residential gas in the region.

The longest in the world, breaking through many world-class problems

The Yangtze River shield tunnel has an inner diameter of 6.8 meters and a horizontal length of 10.226 kilometers. It is currently the world's oil and gas pipeline field with the longest single tunneling distance, the deepest buried depth, the highest water pressure, and the largest diameter. Based on a high starting point, insisting on high standards, and adopting new technologies, the National Pipe Network Group overcomes many world-class problems such as long-distance shield tunneling, large-diameter pipe installation in shields, deep shaft design in water-rich strata, and biogas strata crossing.

On-site construction equipment is ready

For the first time, three pipelines with a diameter of 1422 mm across the river were laid at the same time, making full use of the ability of the river crossing channel. For the first time in the shield traversing within 10 meters, the world's cutting-edge shield technology, such as atmospheric cutter head change technology, and “zero disturbance” precise control of tunneling, was adopted. At the same time, the water-proof structure of the joints with “two elastic seals + outer sponge rubber strip + inner caulking” is used to improve the waterproof effect. Through digital design in the design phase and digital deconstruction of equipment, intelligent logistics and warehousing in the acquisition phase, intelligent construction management based on the smart site in the construction phase, electronic transfer of completion data in the completion phase, and in-depth digital management to enhance perception and control in the operation phase, the realization of the goal of "full digital handover, full life cycle management, and full intelligent operation" is finally ensured.

The launching of the 53-meter-high three-axis mixer marked the official start of the project.

In view of the complex technology, difficult construction, and high safety and environmental protection requirements of the shield project, The National Pipeline Network Group adheres to the concept of safety, environmental protection and green development, and fully absorbs the construction experience of the Sino-Russian Eastern Route, the northern section, and the West-East Gas Pipeline. Experts have been arranged to conduct 10 special technical research projects, and the design methods and construction techniques for safety and environmental protection have been determined. Through the use of shield tunnels to cross the Yangtze River, the waste slag generated by shaft excavation and tunnel excavation will be transported to the waste slag point in time by river transportation to construct a green project.

A total length of 5111 kilometers, passing through 9 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities

The Sino-Russian East Route Natural Gas Pipeline Project is an important strategic cooperation project between China and Russia personally instructed, witnessed, and personally promoted by General Secretary Xi Jinping. It is an important strategic cooperation project for establishing a comprehensive Sino-Russian energy partnership. The project is constructed in phases according to the north, middle and south sections. The length of the whole line is 5111 kilometers. The starting point is located on the Sino-Russian border in Heihe City, Heilongjiang Province, passing through nine provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities including Heilongjiang, Jilin, Inner Mongolia, Liaoning, Hebei, Tianjin, Shandong, and Jiangsu, and arriving in Shanghai at the end. Among them, the northern section of the Sino-Russian Eastern Route (Heihe-Changling) was put into operation on December 2, 2019; the middle section (Changling-Yongqing) of the project is under full construction and is scheduled to be completed and put into operation by the end of this year; the southern section of the Russian-Eastern Route has a total length of 1,509 kilometers, with 1,243 kilometers of newly built pipelines, and 266 kilometers of existing pipelines.
